Dr Julian Demetriadi

In June 1977, Dr Julian Demetriadi FIH MTS graduated from HND Dorset Institute of Higher Education (now the University of Bournemouth) with an HND in hospitality management, before starting his career as feature writer on The Catering Times – the then weekly rival to the Caterer & Hotelkeeper. In the mid-1980s, he worked in hospitality, tourism and leisure Public Relations for Wordsmith and Company, formed by Miles Quest FIH FTS , the then former editor of Catering Times. Over a 30 year period, Julian has edited, researched and written numerous articles and publications on the hospitality, tourism and leisure industry. This includes a period in the mid-1980s as editor of Hospitality magazine. In 1989, he gained a 2:1 honours degree in history, having studied part-time at Birkbeck College, London University. Later that year, he formed his own PR consultancy and combined running this with lecturing and being a tourism historian. Indeed, he is one of the country’s foremost experts on the post-war decline of English and Welsh seaside resorts – the subject of his PhD which he was awarded in 1995 by the University of Lancaster.
Julian’s PR clients past and present include: the Institute of Hospitality (including Hospitality Assured and Hospitable Climates); the British Association of Hotel Accountants (BAHA); the Deans Place Country Hotel and Restaurant, Alfriston, East Sussex; MESV Consulting; English Tourist Board (now VisitBritain); TRI Hospitality Consulting; Corus and Regal Hotels; Knight Frank; the Grand Hotel in Le Touquet, France; British Library; Conference Line and Soho Poly Theatre, London.
In 2006, he was invited to serve on the advisory board of Hospitality Magazine. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality and a Member of the Tourism Society.
