St. Kentigern Hospice and Palliative Care Centre at Upper Denbigh Road, St Asaph, Denbighshire, is the first such healthcare organisation ever to achieve Hospitality Assured.
The hospice and palliative care centre – which provides medical care for patients as well as social, emotional and spiritual support to patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure oriented treatments – gained the Hospitality Assured Standard for its catering service department.
The department shares a common objective with all St Kentigern Hospice’s facilities – namely, to give a first-class service to patients, staff, visitors and relatives. This function relies heavily on the army of volunteers who attend the patients and assist the three-strong catering services department with general kitchen duties. Under the guidance of Marilyn Gilligan MIH, the hospice’s Housekeeper/Chef, the catering services department is not only responsible for feeding resident and day patients, visitors and special events, but also supervising and monitoring cleaning throughout the hospice – incorporating the laundry service.
Commenting on gaining Hospitality Assured, Marilyn Gilligan said: “We are delighted to have gained such a prestigious award and are very proud to be the very first hospice to be accredited with Hospitality Assured. We hope that the Standard will raise the profile of the hospice and that it will do much to help enhance the public’s perception of what we do as a charity.”
Ann Corrigan, Deputy Chief Executive of the Institute of Hospitality, presented the Hospitality Assured Certificate and Plaque to Marilyn Gilligan and her team at a special ceremony, held at St Kentigern Hospice on Thursday, 30 August 2007.
“Congratulations go to Marilyn and her catering service team on their fine achievement,” said Ann Corrigan. “The assessors were particularly impressed with the level of commitment and dedication, as well as the quality of the sensitive care provision, demonstrated by the staff and volunteers that were interviewed. It is especially pleasing that St. Kentigern is the first hospice to become Hospitality Assured.
“St. Kentigern Hospice was supported throughout the process leading to Hospitality Assured accreditation by Isle of Anglesey-based Catlow Consulting.”
